The Fourth of July is over, I know, I know. But I’m still in the mood for summer food and adorable picnics.
I think people often get overwhelmed with the idea of having a picnic because it seems complicated, but in reality, it can be just as simple (or as complex) as you want! Grab a blanket and a picnic basket and start filling it up with whatever your heart desires. Say goodbye to expensive date nights or dinners out with friends…this is just as fun (if not more fun!) because you’re outside and let’s face it, it’s just too cute.
Here are six “musts” for the perfect summer picnic:
1. Good scenery
The whole point to a picnic, in my mind at least, is to enjoy some fresh air and a beautiful view. The cool thing is that you don’t have to go into the middle of nowhere to enjoy some great scenery. Whether it’s a city rooftop view, a beach picnic, or even your backyard – it’s still a change from your everyday routine, which makes it fun!
2. Perfect Outfit
If you’re planning on Instagramming this fiasco (which, let’s face it – if you’re going to all this trouble, you’re probably going to post it!), then make sure to wear something cute. A summery dress or romper would make for the perfect picnic outfit – choose something that you’re comfortable in, since you’ll be sitting on the ground!
3. Food and Drinks
Okay, this is my favorite part….and probably everybody’s favorite part. This is where you can get as simple or as classy as you want. For my picnic, I brought turkey sandwiches, lots of fresh seasonal fruit, hummus chips, and cute drinks. I prepared everything myself, but you could also even get it pre-made if you wanted to skip the hassle but still enjoy the experience – there’s so much flexibility! If you wanna get classy, you could even bring a few candles for some ambiance.
4. The Basket
Get a cute basket, but also make sure it’s big enough to hold everything that you need. I know the food is the most important, but don’t forget utensils, napkins, paper cups and plates, and a trash bag (no littering in nature, people!)
5. Music
I think most people forget about this one, but this really jazzes things up and makes a huge difference. If you have a wireless speaker, bring it! Relax to some Ben Rector or your favorite Spotify playlist as you enjoy the moment!
6. Friends/Significant Other
I think this one is a given, but please…don’t go alone! Picnics are meant to be shared! Invite some of your close girlfriends (maybe you could each bring different components of the picnic) or your significant other to enjoy it with you. It’ll be even better if you make it a surprise for that special person in your life.
So relax, take in a beautiful sunset, and be sure to let me know how it was!

Glad you liked it! I’m with you, girl – let’s get some sunshine over here! Haha!
Wow, your spread looks so yummy! I’ve never had a picnic before, but have always liked the idea of it. The reason I haven’t is because of the annoying bugs trying to get into the food, but when you think about it, it really is minor 🙂 I do have a question, for your drinks, how do you store them? Do you bring ice? Thanks for sharing, beauty, I loved all of your suggestions; I just may try doing a picnic this summer with my hubby! I hope you’re having a great day so far!

Thanks Jalisa! Picnics can be a little extra effort – but I think that you would absolutely love it! They’re fun and can be super romantic also! I don’t usually bring ice because it just ends up melting by the time I get there. For the drinks, I usually bring a thermos and glasses to pour it into – that way we can keep refilling! The thermos also seems to keep the drinks cold enough without ice.
As far as the bugs go, I would really recommend bringing a few citronella candles. This keeps the bugs away and it can also set the mood at the same time. 🙂
Good luck on your picnic! xoxo
I love this idea especially in the summer. Picnics are easy and fun and a great way to spend time outdoors. Such great photos!
